I wonder if Simon Properties management is even paying attention to the GREAT things happening in other malls: http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/008328.html

  2. Katie says:

Obviously we can’t all have the http://www.mallofamerica.com/attractions but they are more than thriving with things in there like schools (high school and university) and offices. Think how cool it would be to shop for that little black dress on your lunch hour, get your car tag, see your doctor, run get a Starbucks at break or walk the mall for exercise, go to the bank, go to the dentist, grocery shopping as soon as you walk out the door at 5, grab the kiddos from the on-site day care, see a movie that evening and even have an apartment there, have an area like some housing additions where you can use the clubhouse/conference room when you have family in. The nearby hotel could house guests when they come in or maybe there would be a hotel inside. You’d have security….

  3. David says:

Malls are being revitalized and re-purposed. Malls that continue to thrive are reinventing themselves as “town squares” or “neighborhood centers” “civic centers”. Transformed they now provide much more than shopping. Some of the non-retail uses leasing space are libraries, a university and other schools, medical center and other types of health care facility, churches, real estate and insurance offices, post offices, community halls, public art, apartments, office buildings, gyms, skating rinks, amusement parks and museums.

    • Britt says:

Transformed into a cultural center for the community they are like an air-conditioned Main Street. These “walkable communities” can evolve into mini-cities, when you add residences, with condos above or offices next door.

The “small town feeling” is encouraged when owners of enclosed malls use outdoor town center concepts, featuring brick sidewalks, streetlights and even public clocks evoking the Main Street by-gone days. Revitalized malls can thrive as a local community center that focuses on the daily needs of older residents (we are all aware that we have a huge population of older adults–thanks to the baby boomer generation and many have plenty of money to spend) and especially surrounding neighborhoods, businesses and institutions.

  4. Teresa says:

Some very talented entrepreneurs are starting new retail brands online and many of us shop at them: http://www.bonobos.com/welcome/h7a for pants, http://www.jhilburn.com/ for sweaters, http://www.ledbury.com for shirts and http://www.warbyparker.com for eyeglasses. All of these brands design and source their own goods. Taking advantage of opportunity for online commerce malls can become call centers for all the stores that are going strictly “on-line”.

P.S. http://www.bonobos.com/welcome/h7a will give you 20% off when you get on their mailing list!
