A few of the many places in the Tulsa area where you can donate toys for kids this Christmas

Help us build a list of places that are collecting toys and more for the needy in and around the Tulsa area. There are several more in the comments that have been added so be sure to check them!

(Be sure you check before you drop gifts by as they may have already closed for the year. And be very careful of those standing outside at Walmart as some are not really with a group and are reselling the items on eBay!)

SALVATION ARMY

Angel Tree Promenade and Woodland Hills Malls   (Broken Arrow and Sand Springs also have them.)

 Angel Tree Stats for 2015: Salvation Army put almost 10,000 children  on the Angel trees this year. In 2010 3500 families in the Tulsa area had children who had a wish list on the Angel Tree, with 7,000 kids as this  Letter to the Editor from  Salvation Army Tulsa area commander shows:   When I wake up this Christmas morning, I will be blessed with the vision of a child from a needy family opening his toy. Every Christmas I think, “Without the Salvation Army, he may not have had anything to open. And Tulsa, without you, we could not have provided a toy for that child or the 6,999 other children who opened gifts on Christmas morning.)

Angel Tree families receive food baskets with fresh fruit, milk, eggs and canned goods, when they come to pick up the Angels gifts. When a family signs up for the Angel Tree program, not only do the children receive toys, the whole family receives a half of a carload of food called “a food basket” The food  includes fresh dairy and produce as well as a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. It’s enough food to feed a family of four for two weeks!  The families usually hear about the program from a social service agency where they are already receiving assistance.

Sponsors: Each year, sponsors ranging from neighborhood associations to private companies volunteer to place “Angel Trees” in high-traffic areas within their community, organization or office. Salvation Army will collect the gifts for distribution along with food and meals to help needy families enjoy the holiday season.Read more here: Angel Tree on k955fm.com

Homeless

Center of Hope homeless shelter and social services center The Salvation Army’s services for homeless people is at 102 N. Denver Ave.

Cooper’s List, a project to collect and deliver goods to the homeless, was inspired by 6-year-old Cooper Andrew who saw a homeless man and wanted to be a Good Samaritan. Cooper and his classmates at McAuliffe Elementary School came up with a list of things homeless people need and a plan to encourage people to donate blankets, clothing and food. Cooper’s List collection boxes have been set up at the school and his church. A GoFundMe page was set up so people can make cash gifts to the project to buy backpacks in which to deliver the donated items. Cooper and his family and their friends will deliver the gifts  to the Boiler Room, a ministry helping the homeless conducted by a group of Tulsa-area house churches.

I like what Salvation Army had on their Facebook page: The book titled, “Why Good Things Happen to Good People” says that research shows we are hardwired to feel good when we do good! Your body creates more dopamine when you take part in altruistic behaviors.

http://www.tulsacan.org/about.htm Each year Cornerstone and AM-1170 KFAQ team up to raise funds on-air to purchase thousands of Christmas turkeys. Churches then deliver full Christmas dinners to hurting families in their neighborhoods. While in the homes, churches wish families a Merry Christmas and offer them the opportunity to have a happy New Year by receiving life-transformation support to leave poverty.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Charities to give to: You should pick them–They should not pick you. Just because something comes in the mail asking for money to help kids is not a reason to write a check.
Check them out carefully.
How Can I Find Families that Need Help at Christmas? One of the best ways to find deserving families with needs at Christmas is through word-of-mouth. There may be co-workers who have suffered recent personal losses and might appreciate a charitable gesture. Local newspapers often publish articles on the plight of families who have lost everything due to fire or other natural disasters. Fellow church members or ministers may also know of families in need, especially during the holiday season. A private meeting with a local pastor or church secretary may provide the necessary contact information for local families in crisis.
Would you like to help where it is needed?
  • Families who have a child in the hospital might not be able to buy for their other kids.
  • a co-worker may be struggling
  • more and more elderly are having a hard time. Seniors may need more of the bare necessities to survive.
  • Nursing homes are full of people who would just love to see a kind face.
  • Let’s not forget our vets in the hospital and care centers.
  • There are kids in the rural areas outside of Tulsa that do not have any organizations that mom and dad can go to.
Places that know older people in need: Hospice groups, Visiting Nurses, those who provide some help for an Alzheimers patient in a Nursing Home.
Consider adopting a centenarian for the holiday season.
Call Mary Lou Gibson, 918 622-4239, of the Northeast Active Timers (NEATs) group.
A couple of priceless things people could do for nothing at all :
  • Appear at a nursing home with a chessboard and challenge someone to a game.
  • Shovel the neighbors walk.
  • Do nice things for people who will never find out that you were the “one”.
39 Responses to A few of the many places in the Tulsa area where you can donate toys for kids this Christmas
  1. Katie says:
    Tulsa-area U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program collects new, unwrapped toys during the last three months of each year, and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community.     Cooper’s List collection boxes have been set up at the school and his church.
    Christmas for Kids Drive helps Tulsa County’s foster parents afford gifts during the holidays for children in their care.
    The drive is a joint project of the Tulsa Advocates for the Protection of Children and the child welfare division of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. It is coordinated through the county’s Foster Care Resource Center, which provides clothes and other items for free to foster families.
    Christmas is an expensive time of year, and many foster parents have children of their own to buy for as well. This is a way to help them out. We always tell them that these gifts are from you, not DHS. They are from you to the kids or from Santa Claus.”
    DHS is closing the Laura Dester Shelter in the next couple of months as part of the Pinnacle Plan, which is the negotiated agreement in a federal class-action lawsuit. The closure means children will be going directly into homes and group homes, increasing the demands on the resource center.
    Basically, the same number of children are coming into foster care. Rather than going to the shelter, they are going into individual homes, and the parents in those homes need support, Browne said.
    Needed items are early childhood toys, ethnic dolls, action heroes, anything trendy (such as Legos or “Frozen” movie-themed items), remote-control cars and gifts cards for the teenagers. Clothing is needed for infants to toddlers up to 4T.
    Distribution to the foster parents begins Tuesday and continues through Thursday, and donations will be accepted through Wednesday.
    The homeless call it a godsend.
    “For whatever reasons, they don’t trust the social services, so we’re trying to build that rapport and let them know about the services that are available. We want them to trust us, and that takes time and effort.”
    the agency distributed roughly 300 backpacks, mostly through its Denver House drop-in center.
    which are a prized commodity when you’re outside all day walking in rain, sleet and snow,
    Every pack also included a coffee mug that can be filled up at Denver House.
    “These are almost like backpack survival kits,” Davis said. “We like to think that they’ve helped play a role in people not dying or catching pneumonia as a result of being homeless in inclement weather.”
    This is the third winter the mental health agency has distributed backpacks to the homeless. In total, it has passed out more than 650 packs.
    “We have the sheltered homeless individuals who are out in the community, . “You might see them downtown or at a shelter. There are a lot of other individuals who are uncounted for, who are not on the grid, that show up for these backpacks.
    The chartered American Airlines aircraft, provided by American Airlines, plays the role of Snowball Express. Children who have recently lost a parent usually come into the weekend very somber but the festivities are so exciting that soon they can’t help but smile.
    The Krazy Stitchers club sews weighted blankets for kids with autism. The weight holds them down and makes them feel secure, helping them to sleep through the night. The blankets will be donated to a consortium of special education teachers and schools in Rogers County. The consortium will then distribute the blankets to students who need them.
    The club, which is under the Oklahoma Home and Community Education program works with the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service at Oklahoma State University.
    Tonda Ames with Sooner SUCCESS (a free information and referral program for families who have special-needs children ) has been trying to help them raise money for the pellets that are inserted in the blankets to weight them.The pellets online cost $50 for 25 pounds. The donations will allow them to continue making the blankets.
    The members of the club donate the fabric and their time to the project. They are considering selling some of the blankets for about $30-$35 to families who want them so the group may continue to fund its donated blankets to the special-needs consortium.
    The blankets made by the group are 8 pounds each. The recommendation for weighted blankets is 10 percent of a child’s weight and adding 1-4 pounds. But because they do not know the children who will receive the blankets, they have standardized the weights.
    Donations can be mailed to the group at Rogers County Coalition, P.O. Box 1863, Claremore, OK 74018. Donors are asked to specify the recipient of the donation as the Krazy Stitchers Club. For more information about the organization, visit rogerscountycoalition.org or call 405-584-1184.
    Hey, someone is finally doing something for others besides kids. Helping Seniors at Christmas:
      FOSTER KIDS
      -More than 500 volunteers at The Assembly church in Broken Arrow assembled 500 bicycles recently that were given away last week to children in foster care.
      -Also, members of Northstar Church in Pryor provided Christmas gifts this week for close to 500 foster children who are in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. They spend an average of $250 a kid on each of these kids
      Kids who are aging out of foster care could really use some help (Life Launch)
      Imagine aging out …maybe you don’t have any idea how to make a meal as it was always done for you…and not having a single recipe like other kids who have some special food that Grandma or mom always made for you (who knew you could make pimento cheese out of cheddar you grate…well, if you had a grater, some mayo and pimiento…and you could eat that)…you may not know the importance of eating foods that are healthy (sugar causes inflammation and your body can’t build health out of junk food) so you don’t become obese or get diabetes…maybe you have no pots and pans…or don’t know how to use a washer or dryer…don’t know how to drive (who was going to pay for you to take Driver’s Ed to teach you?)…you may receive a government stipend but don’t have a clue that one must budget or it WILL run out…you don’t know a thing about finances…don’t know how to set up a bank account or to put a POD on it…don’t know how to get discounts (with Retailmenot and others) so you can extend you money…or what could happen if you run up the credit card bill…what is this interest anyway?…you don’t know what forks to use, that you should hold the door for others, the importance of saying please and thank you…of leaving a place cleaner than you found it….maybe you never stayed anywhere long enough to be taught how to clean a house…or to help clear the table…maybe you never rode a horse…never had anyone really encourage you in your school work, you never got to be a boy Scout to have those experiences….never got to take ballet….leaving you feeling like you don’t fit in…and never will.
      Why does this Foster Care Alumni reunion makes sure the former foster families have leftovers to take home?
      Foster children often don’t have the experience of eating holiday leftovers or receiving any from family gatherings. Everyone is going to leave the holiday party Saturday with leftovers. “I love the idea of leftovers,” said Lupe Ortiz-Tovar. “There’s something special about it that says family- someone cares enough to send food home. Whether you eat it at midnight or the next day, you remember where you were for that meal. There’s something comforting about it. I think I like leftovers better than the actual meal,” she says. This tradition of leftovers is one of her favorites.
    At the beginning of the school year Project Elf, a local nonprofit that serves needy schoolchildren at nearly 100 public and private schools in the Tulsa area provides uniforms, outer garments, school supplies, backpacks and personal hygiene products. The organization which receives donations from more than 800 volunteers works with several social service agencies, including area homeless shelters. The month before school starts is usually one of the busiest times of the year for Project Elf. In 2015 they provided items to nearly 600 kids from July 1 to Aug. 17, a 42% increase over the same period from 2014 due, in part, to more social service agencies being aware of Project Elf and the services it provides.
